| Spirited fight back too late for cup progress |

| Last weekend saw Thornbury entertain South West II (East) side Cleve in the second round of the Intermediate Cup. Cleve are undefeated in the league having made a very positive start to the season, and the first half showed everyone why, as the visitors ran in three quality tries against a committed Thornbury side who struggled to get into the game, despite three well struck penalties from outside half Simon Weaver. Things looked fairly bleak for Thorns at half time, but they emerged for the second half to play up the hill with a renewed vigour, and they started to take the game to their high flying guests. The second half was far more satisfying for Thorns as they scored 12 unanswered points including a well worked try for flanker Matt Wooton and a finely taken effort from the increasingly impressive Ollie Flemming on the left wing. The home crowd were treated to a nailbiting finish as Thorns pushed for the winner in the closing stages, but sadly it wasn't to be, and Cleve held on for a deserved win and a place in Round 3. Good luck to Cleve as they continue their progress through the competition. |
