Thornbury bow out of Combination Cup
posted on Saturday 15 January 2005 by Alex Kane
Thorns travelled to St Mary's for the latest round of the Combination Cup after beating Gordano during the Christmas break. Mary's started well, building a 14 point lead in the first few minutes with two good tries through their potent back division. Thorns rallied well, and played some great rugby to claw back a score of their own through skipper Stuey Adams. But Mary's extended their lead with two further tries and Thorns faced a tough task in the second half with the score line at 28-5. A breakaway try for the home side early in the second period could have left Thorns dejected, but to their credit, they played some good determined rugby, edging the territory and eventually winning (the second half at least!) through tries from Simon Whittingham and Andy Bamford. This all left the full time score a more respectable 35-17. Both sides should take credit for providing an enjoyable spectacle for the supporters in what were difficult boggy conditions.
